Shaquina was pregnant, overwhelmed, and scared...how could she manage two small children from a wheelchair?

“When I found out I was pregnant again, I thought that I wouldn’t be able to take care of the baby.”

Shaquina was paralyzed 6 years ago in a tragic accidental shooting.  In a moment, her entire life changed.  However, Shaquina has a unique perspective on her situation.  She recounted that night: “I was standing right beside my cousin who was pregnant.  The bullet lodged in my spine.  If it had hit her, her baby would have died.”  Even through life-altering tragedy, this brave young woman saw that “everything happens for a reason.”

But being pregnant again would challenge that belief.  Shaquina’s cousin told her about Options Now, and Shaquina gathered her courage.  “Everyone was really friendly,” Shaquina said.  She also remembers the opportunity to see her unborn child as the most memorable part of that first visit.  As she prepared for her baby’s birth, anxiety turned to strength as she decided she didn’t have to let fear and overwhelm consume her.  Instead, she moved forward in faith and has overcome more obstacles and most people face in a lifetime.  She is one of the bravest, strongest mothers we have ever met, and we are so proud of her.

Thank you for being part of Shaquina’s story!
